Case Study: A fitter shop fitter

AM System UK uses BIM to design Sony stores.

AM System UK is using the latest in 3D building information modelling (BIM) techniques to effectively design and deliver all sizes of store and concession for client Sony and other leading electronic goods, sports and footwear retailers. Projects range from small concessions within shops to flagship Sony Centres, such as the one recently opened in Heathrow Terminal Five, and

innovative uses of unusual sites such as Scotch Hall shopping centre in Drogheda. AM System UK is not an architect: it is a retail fit-out and manufacturing company. "Retail interior design is no longer simple shelving systems," says Helen Morse, design department manager at AM System UK. "Shop interiors are becoming far more sophisticated and architectural. "This means we need to have more control over our designs and we have to be able to explain their intricacies to the client in a way that is easy to understand. 3D design enables us to model the space and design the store with amazing accuracy: it also allows the client to see clearly what they'll be getting right from the start."

ArchiCAD Curtain Wall

The Curtain Wall tool enables users to configure, place, and edit elements.

The Curtain Wall tool is one of the new features in Graphisoft ArchiCAD 12, which enables users to design and document curtain wall systems. The tool is based upon the new System Technology, which will serve as a foundation for future system-oriented building components.

It is also based upon a flexible hierarchical structure of schemes, physical members, and additional accessories. Users can control and change both the entire system and the smallest detail throughout the entire project.

The Curtain Wall tool enables users to configure, place, and edit an element consisting of Frame, Panel, Accessory, and Junction elements.

To control the whole hierarchy at once, System level settings, which define the overall scheme and configure members on all levels, have been organized into a multi-page settings dialog.

Members of the Curtain Wall arranged on a Base Surface according to a predefined and editable scheme. (Click image for a larger version)
